Walter works primarily in the areas of employee benefits, executive compensation and federal income tax controversies.
Walter advises clients on all aspects of the design, administration and qualification of employee benefit plans and on issues involving benefit plans in mergers and acquisitions and fiduciary and other issues under Title I of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. He has considerable experience in executive compensation matters, including stock options, and in handling federal income tax disputes involving other areas of federal tax law, with a particular emphasis on large case audits of corporations and on tax accounting issues.
Walter is an active member of the Employee Benefits Committee of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association and has chaired subcommittees and task forces within that Committee. He has lectured extensively on both employee benefits and corporate income tax topics at continuing education seminars. From 1970 to 1986, he was a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Emory University School of Law where he taught a course in federal income taxation of corporations and shareholders. Walter is recognized in The Best Lawyers in America, 2003-2004 and 2005-2006 and was named a 2007 Georgia Super Lawyer by Atlanta Magazine in the area of Employee Benefits.
From 1964-1965, he served as law clerk to Judge Walter P. Gewin of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
